-
This movie is based on the book of the same name by Robert
Graysmith, who is also the main character in this movie, played by Jake
Gyllenhaal.
-
Then aspiring screenwriter Shane Salemo who would go on to
write films like Armageddon and the remake of Shaft, optioned
the book rights from Robert Graysmith when he was only 19 years-old. Although
he wrote several working drafts he ended up selling only the rights to
Touchstone reportedly for over a million dollars. Touchstone then attempted
to adapt the book, but after several failed drafts they too scrapped the
project, and the film fell by the wayside until being picked up again by
David Fincher and James Vanderbilt. The film was finally released in 2007,
over 16 years after the book was first optioned.
-
Although mentioned in the plot synopsis as one of the leads,
Chloe Sevigny failed to receive a "box credit" for her work in this film.
-
In a real example of "life imitates art, imitates life",
the character Mark Ruffalo is playing in this film, David Toschi along
with the rest of the characters in this movie are real people, however
it is said that David Toschi was the inspiration for Steve McQueen's character
in the film Bullitt.
