WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
Micky Rourke gives the performance
of a lifetime as pro wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson, a former superstar
now paying the price for twenty years of grueling punishment in and out
of the ring. But he's about to risk everything to prove he has one more
match left in him: a restaging of his famous Madison Square Garden bout
against "The Ayatollah." Darren Aronofsky directs a powerful cast in this
action-packed saga of guts, glory and gritty determination that is "as
irresistible as a headlock" (New York Post).

Rumor has it that due to the budget constraints for the film
that Mickey Rourke appeared in the movie free of charge. In addition Bruce
Springsteen wrote and performed the song The Wrestler for nothing,
and Axel Rose allowed the song Sweet Child O' Mine to be used in
the film without having to pay any royalties.
-
This marks the first time that director Darren Aronofsky
directed a movie that he did not also write the screenplay for.
-
The studio had wanted Nicolas Cage to play the lead role
in this film and had several battles with director Darren Aronofsky, before
the director finally won out and Mickey Rourke was cast in the role.
-
The relationship between The Ram and his daughter was based
on the relationship of real-life wrestler Jake "The Snake" Roberts and
his daughter, which was chronicled in the film Beyond The Mat. The
look of the character was based on Hulk Hogan, while the moves used were
mostly based on that of Randy "Macho Man" Savage.
-
In the film The Ram can be seen playing a video game based
on his career on the original Nintendo system. The game although based
on the graphics of the WWF Wrestlemania game, was an entirely new creation
designed specifically for the movie and was fully playable.
-
The highly toted event between The Ram and Ayatollah is based
loosely on the famous match between Hulk Hogan and Iron Sheik.
