-
This movie is based on the real life accounts of John and
Donna McLoughlin and Will and Allison Jimeno.
-
Oliver Stone had talks with both Mel Gibson and George Clooney
to portray John McLoughlin however both declined as they were committed
to other projects at the time. The role was then given to Kevin Costner,
however he backed out of the role due to pressure from Paramount who was
concerned that because Costner had narrated a documentary about what the
U.S. Government could have done to prevent the 9/11 attacks that people
would associate the movie with that conspiracy theory. The role then ended
up being landed by Nicolas Cage.
-
Shortly after being cast in this film Maggie Gyllenhaal was
quoted as saying: "America is responsible in some way" in regards to the
9/11 attacks, this stirred up quite a bit of controversy and Gyllenhaal
went to the real-life Will and Allison Jimeno and offered to quit the movie
if her comments had offended them, they instead gave her their blessing
to continue on with the project.
-
Many people thought that former marine character Dave Karnes
was made up to enhance the story, however several eye-witness accounts
confirmed that this man existed, however nobody knew who the man really
was. It was revealed shortly after the release of this film that man's
real name was Sgt. Jason Thomas, a former marine who put on his uniform
and drove to ground zero to help with rescue efforts. As soon as he was
done with the rescue effort he re-enlisted in the marines and served two
tours in Iraq. When the real Sgt. Thomas was identified it was discovered
that he was black, while Michael Shannon, the actor who played him in this
movie was white. The studio formally apologized for the mistake, but Thomas
simply laughed and was just glad the story was being told.
