WHITE CHRISTMAS
THE BACK OF THE BOX
WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
White Christmas is
a treasury of Irving Berlin's classics, among them "Count Your Blessings
Instead Of Sheep," "Sisters," "Blue Skies," and the beloved holiday song,
"White Christmas." Two talented song-and-dance men (Bing Crosby and Danny
Kaye) team up after the war to become one of the hottest acts in show business.
One winter, they join forces with a sister act (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen)
and trek to Vermont for a white Christmas. Of course, there's the requisite
fun with the ladies, but the real adventure starts when Crosby and Kaye
discover that the inn is run by their old army general who's now in financial
trouble. And the result is the stuff dreams are made of.

-
Many people mistakenly assume that the song White Christmas
originated in this movie, however it made it's first film appearance 12
years earlier in Holiday Inn.
-
Originally this film was to be a retrospective of many of
Irving Berlin's songs and to reunite Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire who became
very popular after appearing together in Holiday Inn. However Astaire
refused to accept his role as he was claiming to be retired from films
at the time. The role was then rewritten around actor Donald O'Connor who
initially accepted the role and then pulled out at the last minute. Just
before shooting began the script was reworked a 2nd time for his replacement,
Danny Kaye.
-
The Vermont inn seen in this movie is the same inn that was
was used in the film Christmas In Connecticut.
-
This marks the first film to be shot in Paramount's widescreen
process known as Vista-Vision.
-
Actress Vera-Ellen had a severe eating disorder that we now
know as anorexia that resulted in her neck and chest looking withered and
far older then the rest of her body. As a result all of her costumes were
designed to cover those areas and excentuate her legs.
-
Quite a bit of this movie was improvised according to later
interviews with Rosemary Clooney. Much of Bing Crosby's real lines and
speech patterns were his own, the scene in the middle of the night in which
he and Rosemary Clooney discuss what foods cause certain times of dreams
was nearly all improvised.
-
The "Sisters" routine that Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye perform
was originally just the two of them fooling around on set, however director
Michael Curtiz enjoyed the performance so much he put in the film.
