This movie won 3 Academy Awards: Best Actor (Gregory Peck),
Best Adapted Screenplay (Horton Foote), and Best Art Direction. It was
also nomintaed for Best Picture, Best Director (Robert Mulligan), and Best
Supporting Actress (Mary Badham).

While Gregory Peck has stated numerous times this was his
this movie was highlight of his career, the studios originaly wanted to
cast Rock Hudson as Atticus Finch.

Robert Duvall made his screen debut in this movie as Boo
Radley. For six weeks he stayed completly out of the sun and also died
his hair blonde since his character was supposed to have been locked up
all of his life.

Phillip Alford who played Jem Finch did not want to go to
the auditions for this movie, his mother had to convince him to go by telling
him that he would get to miss a hlad a day of school.

This book is based off the novel by Harper Lee, and the main
character in the film shares Lee's maiden name: Finch.

The American Film Institute rated Atticus Finch as the number
one hero character of the last 100 years, and included the film in the
coveted top 100 movies.

Mary Badham who played Scout reportdly screwed up her lines
on nearly every take that took place at the dinner table, causing Phillip
Alford to have to eat bites of the same food over and over again. He apparently
got so upset by this that in the scene where he rolls her in the tire he
purposly rolled her into an equiptment truck.
