In 2007 shortly after the release of this film, the MPAA
announced that it will allow filmmakers to cite previous movies when challenging
the board's decision on a rating. Although they continue to keep the identities
of the boards secret, they have also now agreed to release the demographics
of board members.
-
This film itself was submitted to the MPAA for a rating just
to show how the process works. Not surprisingly the film received an NC-17
rating, which is considered a death sentence for most films, as major chain
theaters on stores will not carry it. However the filmmakers surrendered
the rating and chose to release the film uncut and subsequently unrated.
