TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• This film is based on the book Oil! by Upton Sinclair.
• The character of Daniel Plainview is loosely based on the real-life oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny. The scenes shot in the mansion at the end of the film were shot in the home that Doheny had built for his son.
• Daniel Day-Lewis stated he based his character on the real-life persona of actor John Huston. He prepared for the role for more than a year watching the actor's films, as well as documentaries that featured interviews with Huston. He also listned to old recordings of men talking during the turn of the century.
• This film was shot on location in Marfa, Texas, in the same place and the same time as the film No Country For Old Men. The pyrotechnics used to make the oil rigging catch fire caused so much thick black smoke that it actually shut down the No Country For Old Men production for a day because it was impossible to shoot in those conditions.
• The role of Eli Sunday was originally given to Kel O'Neill, while the smaller role of Paul Sunday was to be played by Paul Dano. However after shooting Paul Dano's scenes as Paul, director Paul Thomas Anderson decided he wanted him to play the role of Eli, which by comparison was huge. Dano agreed and had only three days to prepare before his scenes began shooting. There was not enough time to reshoot the scenes that involved Paul Dano as Paul Sunday, so as a result it was decided that Paul and Eli would be identical twins.
