ADAPTATION (2002)

OPENING THOUGHTS

    If you take one fucked up mind, give him a twin, have Nicolas Cage play both of those people and then add Meryl Streep to the mix, you got your self one strange trip.

ACTING

    NICOLAS CAGE can be bloody brilliant. Like he is in this. Other times he's no more than a masturbating monkey, see my review for National Treasure. Cage plays Charlie Kaufman, a real and real weird fella; as well as his fictional twin. He's really fuckin' good in both roles and they are pretty different. But they do have the same kind of hair... so there's that.
    MERYL STREEP is an old beeotch and even though Hefe doesn't like her one damn bit, I do. And she was kick ass in the film. She does drugs, fires a gun and almost shows her fun bags. But more importantly I believed through out all of this. Oh yeah, and she rides Nicolas Cage like a bull.
    CHRIS COOPER was fucking amazing. He had no front teeth and really pulled off the white trash thing but he also balanced it with sincerity and gentleness. The only person I've seen to do the same thing was my uncle. My uncle who has touched me in ways I can't describe. Actually I can, he fingered my asshole.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

    SPIKE JONZE has a love affair for the off kilter which explains his raging hard on for Charlie Kaufman. Only Jonze could've made sense out of this perplexing script and if a director of lesser caliber took the helm it could've ended up like a pile of used condoms.
    CHARLIE KAUFMAN and DONALD KAUFMAN are credited with the screenplay but only Charlie exists. Weird, I know. The script isn't nearly as bizarre as his earlier film, Being John Malkovich, but it's still left of center. My only beef with this film was the dramatic tone shift that takes place 3/4 of the way through the movie... it didn't take me out of the film completely but it did feel strange for it to take the direction it did.

THE VERDICT

    Excellent vision and pacing and a great cast help make this movie kick ass. It's not your average Hollywood movie and you all should get off your asses and see it.
