THE JANITOR'S REVIEW OF:
THE DEPARTED (2006)

OPENING THOUGHTS

I have this theory, that whenever you place multiple big name actors into one movie, the movie tends to be a flop. The actors try to out act each other, especially when there's heavy dialogue. Ooooh and accents, that's the worse, When characters have accents, they get thicker and thicker until someone is speaking cockney. Anyway, for the most part, I'm right. Except for this movie.

ACTING

JACK NICHOLSON played Frank Costello, a big time crime lord with connections all over the place. Nicholson did a great job in this film, one of his best acting roles in years. I watch his character in this movie and can only wonder just how much prep-time could have gone into this role. He has his own style and it works.
LEONARDO DICAPRIO starred as Billy Costigan, a low life thug turned good... then bad? I'm not a major fan of DiCaprio but I can't help but respect the man. He did a good job and I just can't stick my nose up at it. I think that he takes his job as an actor seriously and you have to respect him for it. One thing that I noticed is that his accent did waver from time to time. It started to get on my nerves a little, but I think all in all, it wasn't a bad job.
MATT DAMON portrayed Colin Sullivan a bad guy... turned good? I think that Matt Damon may have a touch of Downey in him... No, not as in Robert Downey... but like a retard downey. I'm not sure how he made it as an actor. Nevertheless, he still did an excellent job, especially for a tard. Oh yeah, his accent... First off, I can't do an accent to save my life, but this guy; he seems to love roles with accents. He's about as good at accents as I am with pissing in a straight line. (By the way, my dick is like a swirley straw).
MARK WAHLBERG played Dignam. He was kind of a dick, but he also did a good job. I must admit, everyone in this movie did a good job. Wahlberg didn't get the honor of gracing the screen as often as some of the other actors, but his role was as powerful as any of the others. He gave it his all and pulled out a good performance. (Forget that swirley straw dick comment earlier).

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

MARTIN SCORSESE directed this movie. I must say that this movie captured my attention. At one time I did find myself thinking that this movie was pretty long, but I never got bored of it. The direction was dead on and the movie just had a flow to it. I really enjoyed his work on this movie.
WILLIAM MONAHAN wrote this movie. (Siu Fai Mak wrote Wu Jian Dao, the original screen play). This movie had everything that I wanted to see. Action, suspense, violence... I was surprised that they could have pulled off a movie this good with out showing any titties. But they did, and more power to em.

THE VERDICT

This is a movie that I would highly recommend. If you are looking for a good movie with a good story and lots of action, this movie is a top choice of mine. I can see why it won the Academy Award, it deserved it, by far.
