THE JANITOR'S REVIEW OF:
APOCALYPTO

OPENING THOUGHTS

I heard from two different sources that this movie wasn't worth the time of day. So naturally I decided to go to the video store and rent it. While I was at the video store, I told the lady checking me out that I heard from two different sources that this movie wasn't worth the time of day. The guy standing in line behind me said that "he saw it and really liked it, he thought it was awesome".  I didn't know what to do, I had two conflicting opinions. I decided to rent the movie anyway and make my own mind up.

ACTING

RUDY YOUNGBLOOD played Jaguar Paw, a Mayan tribe member who becomes the leader of his own destiny. (I thought of that myself, it wasn't a tag line or anything), Ahem,... anyway, Youngblood did a great job, being one of his first real acting experiences. I wonder what he thought of craft service? Not having to go off and kill his food, having someone cook it for him, he must have thought the white people were GODS. Probably not though, since he was born and raised in California.
DALIA HERNANDEZ played Seven, that was her name, Seven. She was the wife of Mr. Paw, and the mother of his two children. Hernandez did a great job, I felt like I was watching a National Geographic whenever she was on screen. I saw her jumblies and everything, they were nice. Unfortunately I don't see a big career for her in the future, not unless they come out with Apocolypto 2.
MORRIS BIRDYELLOWHEAD played Flint Sky, I don't really remember who he was, I'll have to watch the movie again, but I just put him down because of his name. Birdyellowhead did a good job, I think, I mean; they all did a good job so that would mean that Mr. Birdyellowhead did a good job too, right?

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

MEL GIBSON directed this movie and I think he did a brilliant job. I think that people were looking for a History Channel original documentary when watching this movie, but the movie was really based more on the small tribes that had to serve under the Mayan civilization. It was a great piece of contemporary entertainment and I didn't expect anything more from it, which may be the reason I liked it so much.
MEL GIBSON and FARHAD SAFINIA wrote the script for this movie. I thought that it was really good. I enjoyed it immensely. I felt like I was a part of the tribe, except I couldn't understand a damn thing that they were saying, thank God there were subtitles. I applaud these two for a job well done.

THE VERDICT

If you ask me, I agree with the guy from the video store as opposed to my two sources, this movie was a great piece of entertainment. I would eventually like to own this movie, when it comes to previously viewed. But until then, I will ask you to do as I did and see it for yourself. Who knows what you might think.
