THE BACK OF THE BOX
WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
This delightfully entertaining
romantic comedy stars Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde) as sophisticated
Melanie Carmichael, a rising New York clothing designer who suddenly finds
herself engaged to the city's most eligible bachelor. But this no fairy
tale romance for Melanie. She has skeletons in her fashion-filled closet
that include Jaske - the backwoods husband she married in high school who

This film was originally called Melanie's Getting Married,
but was later renamed after the famous Leonard Skynard song, Sweet Home
Alabama.
-
Originally Charlize Theron was cast as Melanie early on in
production, however when the actor's strike was announced she left the
project to star in Trapped which was ready to begin filming as she
was concerned she would not be able to start shooting before the strike
took effect. Reese Witherspoon was later cast on the same weekend that
Legally
Blonde premiered in theaters.
-
This was the first film to be allowed to shoot in New York
after the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
-
After poor screen tests this film had to have massive re-shoots
and editing which included an entirely different ending, and the removal
through editing of an entire character named Erin Vanderbilt, which was
played by Katharine Towne.
-
While some of the filming of this movie took place in Alabama,
a large portion was filmed in Georgia. The Carmichael house which ia actually
known as Oak Hill, the dog cemetery, and the show room were among the locations
shot in Georgia.
