WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
HE'S BACK. A hero for our
millennium. And not a moment too soon, because during the five years (much
longer in movie-fan years!) Superman sought his home planet, things
changed on his adopted planet. Nations moved on without him. Lois Lane
now has a son, a fiance and a Pulitzer for "Why The World Doesn't Need
Superman." And Lex Luther has a plan that will destroy millions
- no, billions - of lives.
Filmmaker Bryan Singer (X-Men,
X2)
gives the world the Superman it needs, honoring the legend everyone loves
while taking it in a powerful new direction. Brandon Routh proves a perfect
choice to wear the hero's cape, leading a top cast that includes Kate Bosworth
as Lois and Kevin Spacey as Lex. And the thrills - from a sky-grapple with
a tumbling jumbo jet to a continent-convulsing showdown - redefine Wow.
"I'm always around.," Superman tells Lois. You'll be glad he is.

While not billed as a direct sequel but as a continuation,
this film takes place after the Richard Donner films Superman and
Superman
II. The film either does not acknowledge or takes place before the
following two films in the series Superman III and Superman IV:
The Quest For Peace. However most people assume it just doesn't acknowledge
the latter films as the time lines would not match up with the other films
and since director Bryan Singer has stated in interviews he was a huge
fan of the first two films but did not consider the 3rd and 4th films to
be in the same series.
-
In the late 1990's Kevin Smith was asked to write a new Superman
movie. He completed a full script based on the famous "Death Of Superman"
comics of 1993 in which Superman is killed off by Doomsday. Tim Burton
even signed on to direct the film, but after several years in early development
the project was ultimately canceled.
-
Warner Brothers commissioned several other people to write
scripts for a new Superman film after Kevin Smith's script was not used.
Another completed full script was written by J.J. Abrams. First McG signed
on to direct but then left the project, then Brett Ratner signed on to
the project but could not agree with studio execs on who to cast as Superman
and left the project and ultimately ended up directing X-Men: The Last
Stand after getting replaced as the director for Mission: Impossible
3. Bryan Singer was originally slated to film X-Men: The Last Stand,
but left to helm Superman Returns. Meanwhile J.J. Abrams who was
briefly rumored to be in the running for the directors chair after Singer
left ending up directing Mission: Impossible 3.
-
With a whopping budget of $270,000,000 this movie is the
most expensive movie ever made beating out the recent King Kong
remake and Titanic. However, if adjusted for inflation Cleopatra
would still technically be the most expensive film in history.
-
In the original script for this film Zod from Superman
Returns wa scheduled to have a role. Singer was insistent that only
Jude Law could play the role, after Law declined, he had the writers eliminate
the role.
-
The role of Perry White was originally given to Hugh Laurie,
but he had to give up the role to scheduling conflicts with the surprise
success of his TV show House M.D., as a result the role was given
to Frank Langella.
-
Bryan Singer wanted to have Christopher Reeve have a cameo
role in the film, but Reeve died before filming began so he instead dedicated
the film to his memory.
-
Marlon Brando footage from the original 1978 Superman
film in which Brando played the role of Jor-El, was reused in this
film after the actor died. Before deciding to use the archived footage
it was rumored that Anthony Hopkins would be playing the role.
-
Before Brandon Routh was cast as Superman numerous people
were rumored to be considered for the role including: Jerry O'Connell,
Paul Walker, Brenden Frasier, Ashton Kutcher, Josh Hartnett, David Boreanaz,
Henry Cavill, Jason Behr, Jared Padalecki, Ian Somerhalder, and Jim Caviezel.
-
The Kent home was recreated in Australia, the crew literally
grew several acres of corn, paved several miles of road, and built the
house from the ground up.
