According to most experts the sun will not die out naturally
for another 5 billion years, however in this film the sun is dying from
a virus of sorts. The sun has hit with been with a "Q-ball", a supersymmetric
nucleus, left over from the big bang, and that is disrupting the normal
matter in the sun. The "Q-Ball" has not actually been proven to exist yet,
but is a theoretical particle, like Dark Matter that is being researched
by CERN currently. The plot of this film is to shoot a massive nuclear
bomb into the sun to essentially naturally kill off the "Q-Ball" particles
and allow the sun to return to it's normal state.

This marks the second film collaboration between screenwriter
Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle, the first being 28 Days Later
which also starred Cillian Murphy and Rose Byrne.

Writer Alex Garland has said that this movie is his tribute
to psychological sci-fi movies of the past.
