    The Jedi Knights have been exterminated and the Empire rules the galaxy with iron fist. A small group of Rebels have dared to fight back by stealing the secret plans to the Empire's mightiest weapon, the Death Star battle station. The Emperor's most trusted servant, Darth Vader, must find the plans and locate the hidden Rebel base. Princess Leia, a captive Rebel leader, sends out a distress signal that is intercepted by a simple farm boy, Luke Skywalker. Seizing his destiny, Luke takes up the challenge to rescue the princess and help the Rebellion overthrow the Empire, along with such unforgettable allies as the wise Obi-Wan Kenobi, the cocky Han Solo, the loyal Chewbacca, and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO.

TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• Han Solo was loosely based on George Lucas' friend and Godfather director, Francis Ford Coppola. Solo was also initially envisioned as a big green alien with gills.
• Luke Skywalker was originally written as a woman, then he was changed to a midget, then to an old war general. When he finally took his final shape he was named as Luke Starkiller, but that name was also changed.
• Harrison Ford was not originally cast as Han Solo, in fact the character was supposed to be black and was actually given to Glynn Turman who beat out Billy Dee Williams for the role. After the part was made into a white man another set of auditions happened and many now famous actors tried out for the part, including Kurt Russell, Christopher Walken, Perry King, and Nick Nolte.
• 20th Century Fox had to threaten theaters that if they did not play Star Wars then they would not be allowed to show the film The Other Side Of Midnight because less than 40 theaters nationwide were willing to show the movie. Star Wars became so successful that after it's release 20th Century Fox's stock doubled to a record high, while The Other Side Of Midnight ended up making less than 10% of what Star Wars did.
• Peter Mayhew received the role of Chewbacca in what may have been the shortest audition in history, all the 7'2" man did was stand up in front of George Lucas, and he was offered the role in less than 10 seconds.
• David Prowse, the man in the Darth Vader suit was really upset that James Earl Jones ended up voicing the character without ever be told. Jones, however refused to even take credit for his performance saying he didn't think he did enough to deserve credit. He in fact was uncredited in the original release of the movie, his name does not show up until the Special Edition was released in 1997.
