Although portrayed in the film as divorced and somewhat estranged
from his son, Steve Lopez is actually still happily married, this plot
line was added for cinematic effect. In interviews the real Steve Lopez
said that while he found it weird to watch this situation on the big screen
he was more concerned with the filmmakers getting the story of Nathaniel
Ayers right.
-
This movie is based on the true events written by Steve Lopez
in both his articles in the LA Times and his book The Soloist:
A Lost Dream, An Unlikely Friendship, And The Redemptive Power of Music.
-
This film was actually shot in Los Angeles actual skid row,
which is the home to the largest collection of transients in the world.
Many of the homeless people and residents of LAMP are actually homeless
people who live in this area, and play themselves in the movie.
-
The real Nathaniel Ayers was invited to watch filmmakers
shoot the scenes that took place at the Disney Concert Hall, Ayers however
declined, opting instead to play his Cello across the street from the hall
stating "I really got something going here. I think I'm going to stay and
play this just a little bit longer."
