TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• The movie is based off a short story novel by Stephen King called Rita Hayworth And Shawshank Redemption.
• As of 11/10/2006 this movie is ranked #2 on the imdb.com list of the top 250 films of all time.
• All of the outside shots of the prison were filmed at the dilapidated Mansfield State Reformatory in Ohio. Before filming began they had to renovate much of the area, however most of the interior shots were done on a sound stage because it was determined it would be cheaper to build replicas of the inside rather than renovate it.
• In Stephen King's original story Red was an Irishman, hence the line "Maybe it's because I'm Irish." This line was left in as a joke once Morgan Freeman had been cast.
• The role of Andy was originally offered to Tom Hanks, but had to turn the role down as he was already committed to Forrest Gump. The role was then offered to Keven Costner who turned the role down, which he has since said he deeply regretted. The role was then given to Tim Robbins.
• Originally the role of Tommy was meant for Brad Pitt, but after it was found out he would not be taking the role, Gil Bellows was cast.
• The mug shots of Red that look like a young Morgan Freeman are actual pictures of his son Alfonso, who also has a cameo in the movie as a con shouting "Fresh fish! Fresh fish today! We're reeling 'em in!"
• Stephen King sold the rights to this story to Frank Darabont very cheaply. Stephen King says he has a policy that any young aspiring filmmaker can buy one of his short stories for a buck. After Darabont was finished adapting the film Rob Reiner got a glimpse of the script and loved it so much he offered to buy it from Darabont for 2.5 million dollars so that he could direct it. Reiner wanted to cast Harrison Ford as Andy, and Tom Cruise as Red. Darabont seriously considered the offer, but ended up turning it down as he felt this was his chance to make a name for himself.
• This film was dedicated to Allen Greene. Greene was Frank Darabont's agent and he died of AIDS shortly before filming completed.
• Frank Darbont refused to have the deleted scenes available on the DVD because he says he is too embarrassed by them.
• An agent representing an undisclosed supermodel apparently heard about this film's working title: Rita Hayworth And Shawshank Redemption, and tried to get the girl in for an audition for the role of Rita Hayworth without bothering to read the script or the story and not knowing that Rita Hayworth is not an actual character i the film.
• The American Human Association was on set throughout the scenes that featured the crow. The AHA refused to let the crow be fed a maggot on screen as they said it was cruel and unusual punishment for the maggot. The crew was forced to find a maggot that died of natural causes to feed to the crow.
