TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• At a performance consisting of a mere eight minutes of screen time, Judi Dench's Oscar win for her role in this film weighs in as the second shortest in history. She was edged out by Beatrice Straight's 1975 win for Best Supporting Actress in the film Network.
• Julia Roberts was interested in doing this film in 1992 when Universal Studios had the rights to the script. She personally flew out to UK to try and convince Daniel Day-Lewis to take the role of Shakespeare, however he passed on the project as he was already committed to shooting In The Name Of The Father. The studio also considered Kenneth Brannagh in the lead role before shelving the project indefinitely. It was picked up some years later by Miramax and completely recast.
• Judi Dench won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in this film as Queen Elizabeth I. The same year Cate Blanchett was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress in the film Elizabeth for her portrayal of the same Queen Elizabeth I. This marks the first the time that two different actors were nominated for an Oscar for playing the same part in the same year. Geoffrey Rush also was nominated for an Oscar and also appeared in the film Elizabeth. If that wasn't interesting enough, Joseph Fiennes plays the main love interest in both of these films as well, and he himself was not even nominated for either of his performances.
• After poor test reactions to the film's ending, the studio shot and added the ending in which Shakespeare begins to write Twelfth Night at the very last minute. In fact the scenes were shot just a few weeks before the film was released in theaters which required Joseph Fiennes to interrupt a play he was doing in London's West End, while Gwenyth Paltrow had to stop shooting The Talented Mr. Ripley in order to shoot the scenes.
• The unusually large amount of producers that accepted the Academy Award for Best Picture for this film caused the Academy to change it's rules and put a cap of three producers able to receive an award, even if there are more credited for the film. This rule has since been amended again to allow more producers credit if they can petition to show that the producer is very deserving of the credit.
• Judi Dench loved the full scale set recreation of The Rose theater so much that after wrapping the studio gifted the set to her.
