Connor Cruise, Tom Cruise's son, was cast in the film as the young Ben Thomas.
After reading this script in 2006, Will Smith agreed to star and produce this film, he asked director Gabriele Muccino to join the project about a year later after working with him in The Pursuit Of Happyness.
The title of this film is a reference to the William Shakespeare play The Merchant Of Venice, in which a merchant agrees to pay his debt to a money lender with a pound of flesh.
