Originally Kevin Spacey was to have top billing in the movie,
however Fincher spoke with him and they agreed it would be more of a surprise
if he was not advertised in the movie and suddenly appeared near the end
of the film. In exchange Spacey was billed first in the film's end credits
and did not have to do any press junkets or interviews to promote the film.
-
One of the producer's of the film had rewritten the ending
of this movie to be a "happy ending". However once the new script was given
to the actors, Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey all threatened
to walk away from the film if the ending was not restored.
-
Screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker wrote the script for this
film while working at Tower Records over a two-year period. On top of that
it took a very long time to sell the script as he was an unknown screenwriter.
-
Originally R. Lee Ermy had read for the part of John Doe,
however he ended up being cast as the Police Captain.
