WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
Al Pacino gives an unforgettable
performance as Tony Montana. one of the most ruthless gangsters ever depicted
on film, in this gripping crime epic inspired by the 1932 classic of the
same title. Directed by hit-maker Brian De Palma and produced by Martin
Bregman who brought both Godfather legends to the screen, Scarface
follows the violent career of a small-time Cuban refugee hoodlum who guns
his way to the top of Miami's cocaine empire.
With it's intense screenplay by Academy
Award-winner Oliver Stone, driving musical score by Giorgio Moroder, and
superb insights into Miami's Latin lifestyle, Scarface joins the
ranks of Hollywood's greatest underworld dramas, as it lays bare the sordid
power of the American drug scene. Time Magazine calls it "Exhilarating,"
while the New York Times' Vincent Canby applauds the picture as
"Stylish and Provocative."

This movie is based on the book of the same name by Armitage
Trail whose book was first adapted into a screenplay in 1932 by Ben Hecht
and Howard Hawks, although the story has been changed quite a bit for the
remake. The film was dedicated to Hecht and Hawks.

The word "fuck" is said 207 times in this movie.

Oliver Stone wrote the screenplay for this movie while he
was struggling with his own addiction to cocaine.
-
Rap/Hip-hop artists frequently identify this as their favorite
movie. A trend started by the Ghetto Boys who sampled lines from this movie
in many of their songs. In 2003 when this movie had a DVD re-release the
studio had asked Brian De Palma to replace the existing soundtrack with
current hip-hop songs to cater to that audience, however De Palma refused
to compromise his film.
-
Oliver Stone renamed the main character from Tony... as it
was in the original book to Tony Montana because his favorite football
player is Joe Montana.
-
Originally this film was supposed to be directed by Sidney
Lumet, but he dropped off the project, when Brian De Palma heard about
this he dropped off of directing Flashdance and came on board to
direct Scarface.

This film was originally given an "X" rating by the MPAA,
Brian De Palma tried 3 different times by cutting things in the film to
get the rating lowered but all three times he was denied. He then organized
a panel to speak to the MPAA that consisted of real narcotics officers
who testified on the accuracy of the drug scenes in the movies and they
agreed to let his cut version of the film receive an "R" rating. He then
asked the MPAA if he could release the original version of the film as
"R" and they refused to allow it. However, Brian De Palma released the
original version without telling anyone under the "R" rating hoping no
one would notice. No one did notice, and it wasn't until after the film
was released on VHS that he admitted to the rouse.
