-
This film is based off of a book by Dr. Robert M. Lindner.
The first script written for this film was done by Theodore Geisel (AKA:
Dr. Suess) and was set to star Marlon Brando, however the project fell
apart. The only thing that survived from this original story was the name
Rebel
Without A Cause. The story that was used in the film was a completely
different one that was written by director Nicholas Ray and was called
The
Blind Run. The story was later flushed out into a full script by Stewart
Stern.
-
The knife fights between Jim and Buzz used real switchblades
to give it an authentic look on screen. The actors wore chain mail underneath
their vests to protect from any accidental stabbings.
-
Prior to this film T-Shirts were not a popular item in the
U.S., however after James Dean is seen wearing one in this movie the product
became immensely popular and is now a quintessential part of American clothing.
-
Originally James Dean had to pass on this film because of
his commitments to the film Giant, however Elizabeth Taylor became
pregnant and the film was delayed and as a result he was able to take the
role.
-
The name Jim Stark was created as an homage to one of James
Dean's earlier characters in East Of Eden. Jim comes from James'
real name, while Stark is just a rearrangement of the character's last
name in Eden, which was Trask.
-
James Dean's trademark red jacket scene in this film was
almost never seen. This film was originally being shot in black and white
and Dean was set to wear a "nerdy" brown sports coat, however earlier in
production Warner Brothers told them to scrap the black and white footage
and shoot in color. At that point the costumes were redesigned and the
red coat was used instead.
