PSYCHO (1960)
THE BACK OF THE BOX
WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece
of the macabre stars Anthony Perkins as the troubled Norman Bates, whose
"old dark house" and adjoining motel are not the place to spend a quiet
evening. No one knows that better than Janet Leigh, the film's ill'fated
heroine who is victimized in the now-notorious "shower scene." Vera Miles,
Martin Balsam, John Gavin and John McIntire co-star in Hitchcock's most
compelling and terrifying film. Screenplay by Joseph Stefano.

of the book as possible so that no one would know the ending.
-
Even though most films at the time were filmed in color,
Hitchcock decided to film in black and white, it is believed the director
chose to do this because it made bloody scenes seem less violent, and also
because it made filming cheaper.
-
This film was made for a budget of about $800,000 and had
a box office of more that $40 million.
-
The blood scene in this movie was actually Bosco chocolate
syrup.

cold water on actress Janet Leigh to get her to do her now famous scream.

Hitchcock received an angry letter from a father who said
that her daughter refused to take a bath after seeing the film Diaboliques,
Les and now after seeing Psycho refused to take a shower. Hitchcock

the dry cleaners.

Psycho marked the last film that Hitchcock made under
Paramount Pictures. By the time filming took place Hitchcock had already

This marks the first American film to show a toilet flushing
on screen, this happened due at screenwriter Joseph Stefano's repeated
requests to Alfred Hitchcock to show a toilet flushing to add realism to
the movie. Hitchcock told him to make it work in the script and he would
put in the movie.
-
Janet Leigh was only on set for 3 weeks, 1 of those weeks
was spent filming just the shower sequence.
-
Hitchcock decided to make this film after saying he was fed
up with making big budget blockbuster movies, Hitchcock enjoyed shooting
his TV show Alfred Hitchcock Presents that he decided to model the
shooting of this movie after the shooting of the show. As a result he used
lesser-known actors for the film and ended up using much of his crew from
his show as the crew for this movie.
