-
This movie is based on the book of the same name by William
Goldman who adapted the screenplay himself.
-
Originally William Goldman was trying to make this movie
in the 1975, during an attempt to make the movie Goldman had asked Andre
The Giant to read for the role of Fezzik but he would not read for the
role. Arnold Schwarzenegger pushed to get the role but the production fell
through. When production began again 12 years later Schwarzenegger wanted
to much money for the role and Andre The Giant agreed to do the movie.
-
Due to his thick accent much of what Andre The Giant says
is hard to understand, actor Mandy Patinkin would help The Giant by slapping
him in the face when he couldn't be understood and telling him to concentrate
harder. In case you are curious Andre The Giant had a French accent.
-
Despite his enormous size, Andre The Giant was suffering
from severe back injuries and pain when shooting the movie, as a result
he could not actually lift anything heavy, so Styrofoam rocks were used
as well as wires supporting Robin Wright during scenes he was supposed
to hold her. He also used a small rental car to get up and down hills as
he was not able to walk up some of the steep slopes.
-
Although the credits indicate this was Robin Wright's first
movie, she actually was in the film Hollywood Vice Squad starring
Carrie Fisher in 1986.
-
All of the sword fighting was performed by Cary Elwes and
Mandy Patinkin, they spent days choreographing the scene and learning how
to fence.
