DESCRIPTION:

    Neal Page is an advertising executive who just wants to fly home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his family. But all of Neal Page gets is misery. Misery named Del Griffith - a loud mouthed, but nevertheless lovable, salesman who leads Neal on a cross-country, wild goose chase that keeps Neal from tasting his turkey.
    Steve Martin (Neal) and John Candy (Del) are absolutely wonderful as two guys with a knack for making the worst of a bad situation.
    If it's painful, funny, or just plain crazy, it happens to Neal and Del in Planes, Trains And Automobiles. Every traveler's nightmare in a comedy-come-true!

This movie is considered to be the first of John Hughes' more adult comedies. Before this movie he wrote The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, Weird Science, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
This movie has clips of John Hughes' following movie, She's Having A Baby which hadn't been released yet. The most obvious incident is when the movie is playing on the TV in the hotel room.
Steve Martin has said this his favorite role he ever played.
In the car rental scene the word "fuck" is used 19 times in a 60 second time period, this is what caused the film to recieve an R rating. The movie is rated PG in Canada.
There is a never released 3 hour version of this film that has never been cut into a "watchable" version.
Neal's house is the same house used in Home Alone, another John Hughes movie. The house was built from scratch for this movie at a cost of $100,000.
This movie has quite a few cameos including Kevin Bacon, Michael McKean, Ben Stein, and Matthew Lawrence who later appeared in Mrs. Doubtfire and the TV show Boy Meets World.
