-
Several cast members said they prepared for their roles by
watching the classic stoner film Fast Times At Ridgemont High, when
Franco was asked if he did the same thing, he said that he has prepared
by "making out with Spicoli". Spicoli was the character that was played
by Sean Penn, and before filming this movie he had filmed Milk alongside
Penn, during which he had several make-out sessions with the actor.
-
During an interview on the Howard Stern Show, Seth Rogen
said that he had finished this screenplay in 2001 and shopped it around
but could not get anyone to produce the movie. It was only after his success
in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Superbad
that he was able to find a studio that would back it. However he was only
able to get a meager 25 million dollar budget to make the film, which by
Hollywood standards is incredibly small.
-
Much of the dialogue in this film was improvised at the time
of filming. Most notably, the final scene in the diner was not in the original
script, that scene was made up by all three of the actors while on set.
-
During the scene in which Red and Dale are loading up with
weapons, Red mentions that "Ted Jones messed with the wrong melon farmers."
This term melon farmers is an old Hollywood joke, whenever films are edited
for television bad words are dubbed over with words that many times don't
make sense but seem to synch up with what the actors lips are doing. So
whenever someone says "Mother Fucker" it is dubbed over with "Melon Farmer",
hence the line.
