-
The abandoned town of Belchite, a city destroyed during the
Spanish-American War and never rebuilt, can be seen in the opening of this
movie. The same city was used in The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen.
-
After having bad experiences on the translation of the subtitles
in his previous films, writer/director Guillermo Del Toro decided to translate
the subtitles himself.
-
Doug Jones was not only the single American actor in this
film, he was also the only person on set who didn't speak Spanish.
-
Guillermo Del Toro had compiled several books of ideas and
drawings about this movie which he had mistakenly left in a cab. He was
ready to give up on the project, but the cabbie tracked down Del Toro personally
and at his own expense. Del Toro thought the deed was a good omen and he
resumed his quest to make this movie.
