The is the third film in the Mariachi triliogy, the
pervious films were El Mariachi and Desperado. Filming wrapped
in 2001, however the release date was pushed back until 2003.
-
The title of this movie was suggested by long-time friend
Quentin Tarantino who is a huge Sergio Leone fan. The role of Cucuy was
originally written for Tarantino, however he could not accept the role
due to filming conflicts with Kill Bill Vol. 1, he does however
receive a "Special Thanks" credit as a reward for helping with the name.
-
The role of Sands was written originally for George Clooney,
however he turned down the role. He then had conversations about the role
with Bruce Willis, Kurt Russell, Nicolas Cage and Sean Penn before the
role went to Johnny Depp.
-
The chihuahua seen in this film has an i.d. tag on it that
reveals his name to be Moco. Moco is spanish slang which roughly translates
to booger, and was also the name of the primary villain in Desperado.
-
The shootout in the church was done without the use of blanks,
in fact most of the guns seen in the scene are made of rubber. In addition
there was no actual damage done to the church and no squibs used on the
actors. All of these effects were added in post-production as special effects.
Antonio Banderas had a hard time adjusting to shooting a rubber gun without
blanks, and many shots had to be re-done as he kept making the shooting
noises with his mouth.
-
The script for this was just 45 pages long, and would be
the last script that Rodriguez would write as a member of the Writers Guild
Of America. He left the WGA after this film stating, "they have too many
rules and just take your money."
-
This movie was shot completely digital, without the use of
film. Rodriguez was convinced to do this by George Lucas, and became so
fond of the idea that he actually gave lectures about the death of film.
Some of which can be seen in the special features of the DVD. Rodriguez
has said that he used this film as an excuse to push the new digital cameras
to the max to see if they could hold up as well as traditional cameras.
