-
Quentin Tarantino was a guest director on this film, the
scene he filmed was the scene in the front seat of the car with Dwight
and Jackie Boy. Tarantino agreed to direct the scene for a dollar, repaying
the debt he owed Rodriguez who did the score for Kill Bill for a
buck.
-
Rodriguez originally wanted Johnny Depp to play the role
of Jackie Boy, but he was unavailable. While at the Academy Awards, Rodriguez
ran into Benicio Del Toro and saw him with long hair and immediately asked
him not to cut his hair until he read the Sin City script. Del Toro
signed on shortly after.
-
Frank Miller had a bad experience with others trying to adapt
Sin City and as a result refused to release any of his works to
be made into film. Rodriguez loved the novels so much that he decided to
film the opening scene to Sin City with Josh Hartnett and sent it
to Miller along with a note that said "If you like this, this will be the
opening to the movie. If not, you'll have your own short film to show to
your friends." After seeing the footage Miller agreed to allow the making
of the movie.
-
Some of the people offered roles that didn't come to be include
Steve Buscemi, Christopher Walken, Michael Douglas, and Willem Dafoe.
-
Rodriguez said that he does not consider this film an adaptation,
rather a translation, in fact Rodriguez does not even take a writing credit
for this movie, he just credits Frank Miller with the writing of the graphic
novels.
-
The Director's Guild Of America refused to allow Frank Miller
to be a co-director of this movie since he was not a member. Not wanting
to sacrifice the movie or his beliefs Rodriguez decided to instead resign
from the guild himself. As a result he had to rely heavily on Bob and Harvey
Winestien for funding, and also had to give up his director's chair on
the film John Carpenter Of Mars.
