TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• This film is based on the book of the same name by Cormac McCarthy , the author took the title of the book from the poem Sailing to Byzantium by W.B. Yeats.
• The pharmacy that Anton visits in this film is named Mike Zoss Pharmacy. This is a tip of the hat from the Coen Brothers who spent much of their Minneapolis childhood in Mike Zoss Drugs. They were so fond of the shop, they named their production company Mike Zoss Productions.
• The Coen's tied the record for most Academy Award nominations for a single person in a single year. They received nominations as producers for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Directing, and Best Editing. However in the editing category they were credited as Rodrick Jaynes, a pseudonym that the Coen Brothers have used since they first began editing films in 1984. They used this name initially because the editor's guild would not allow to people to be credited in this category and both of them edited the film. This marks the second time that the fictional Jaynes was nominated for an Academy Award, the first was for Fargo. If Jaynes had won the award they would not have been able to accept it, instead the presenter would have to accept as The Academy no longer allows others to accept awards on behalf of another individual since Marlon Brando allowed a fictional Native American to accept his award and deliver a political speech.
• Although it did not make it into the movie, Sheriff Bell spoke a line in the book in which he references a Texas Federal Judge who was murdered in 1979. This references an actual event that took place in San Antonio, in which a Federal Judge was murdered by Charles Harrelson, the father of actor Woody Harrelson who has a role in this film.
• The "gun" used by Anton in this film is a captive bolt pistol, which is most commonly used to stun cattle before they are slaughtered.
• Although most of this film was shot in the desert outside of Las Vegas for monetary reasons, at the request of Tommy Lee Jones, some of the shots were actually done in West Texas. While filming in Texas they were shooting right next to the cast and crew of There Will Be Blood. In fact production had to be shut down for an entire day on this film because the sky was filled with thick black smoke as a result of the oil refinery explosions that were staged for There Will Be Blood.
