The museum featured in this movie is obviously supposed to
be the Museum Of Natural History, while the inside shots were done on a
sound stage in Canada, the exterior shots of the building were of the actual
museum in New York. The museum reported a 20% surge in attendance after
the success of this movie.
-
Owen Wilson's role was supposed to be a small cameo, however
after test audiences loved him in the film, the filmmakers went back and
wrote additional scenes for him, however he still could not be credited.
Despite his larger role, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson only had one day of
actual shooting together and Stiller ending up directing the majority of
his lines at a stand-in tooth pick. Wilson filmed his part later and was
then digitally added in.

Major theaters in the U.K. decided to pull this film from
viewing in protesting to the relatively short span 20th Century Fox gave
for showing exclusively in theaters before being released to DVD. The turn-around
for this movie was about 3 months, unusual for a movie as successful as
this one.
