MR. SPARKLE'S REVIEW OF:
FIGHT CLUB (1999)

OPENING THOUGHTS

I am still in awe of this movie in pretty much every way each time I watch it. I used to have a running tally of how many times I have seen this movie, but I stopped doing the tally at 74 or 5, I can't remember, but that gives you a good idea as to how flat out ground breaking and amazing this movie is, if I have seen it over seventy-five times, and I still am in awe each time I see it. It is just so freaking spectacular, and that is everything about it, the acting, direction, visual effects, cinematography, sound, soundtrack, make up, script/book it is based on, and overall mood. The general dark feel this movie had was really impressive, considering, it also was hilarious in many parts, it is just a great example of masterful film making and one of my favorite movies of all time. Definitely in my top ten.

ACTING

MEAT LOAF ADAY is a God among men... with tits. Great job... for a man that made a sequel to one of his most successful albums. There really should never be a need for an album to have a sequel. Bat Out of Hell TWO?! Are you making yourself a joke on purpose, or is that just the way it goes with you, just the way you roll? At any rate, he did a great job in this movie of convincing me that he not only had ball cancer, but that he had lovely, plump breasts for reals as well. He fit the big dumb lummox role quite well. He was very believable and I accepted his feelings as genuine, and isn't that what it is all about anyhow?
HELENA BONHAM CARTER has an excellent American accent. This is by far the best movie I had ever seen her in, I mean come on, Howards End? Yeah, I fell asleep though that movie twice... at the same time! She did a great job of being a mentally unstable crazy woman that is just incredibly hard to deal with in every way. The kind of personality every man is attracted to, but no one wants to deal with. The crazy girl you can never tame, similar to a stallion in the wild. A beautiful and shimmering stallion... wait, stallions are dudes! Weird. I feel all gay and beast-y now. I need to wash, just real bad.
BRAD PITT kicked this movie's ass, completely. He was so freaking perfect for this role that it simply cannot be described. He had the attitude, the body, the mannerisms, the vocal articulation, the everything of what I pictured Tyler Durden to be like, he was freaking spot on. Whoever did the casting in this movie deserves a Pulitzer. Period. The way he said his lines, and his domineering attitude were so good, I still cry everytime I see him in that movie. I cry a lot.
EDWARD NORTON was also perfectly cast in this movie, in fact, he was the best part acting wise in this film. I love Ed Norton, already, but this movie just puts him over the top in my book as one of the best actors I have ever seen, and certainly on of my favorite to watch list. He put so much into this role, I think I even read somewhere that he put both his kidneys into the movie, I know, weird. Norton brings this completely pathetic, and at the same time very witty and interesting character, to life the best way that I could foresee it happening. The book just doesn't make his character very believable. It makes him seem too fake and idealistic, giving the character too much omnipotence and infallibility. He is just too smart, just too many clues as to who he really is. Ed doesn't do this at all, he is witty but VERY desperate the whole time. Just a great job. As perfect as a performance gets.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

DAVID FINCHER directed this movie so well, my balls fell off! I love everything about the directorial style of this movie. I do mean everything. The shots are beautiful, innovative and varied, the special effects rocked, and the actors chemistry was reaching maximum saturation levels. The camera filters and film used set the mood perfectly, and just the mood in its entirety was penis nuzzling. What? What is better than a good penis nuzzling? I don't think much, my friends, no not much. This is again, as close to perfect as movies get. I would rather watch this movie than have sex... wait, why not combine the two? I can't believe I never thought of it before! I could totally watch this movie while sexing my bitch! I do love sexing up movies, that I do.
JIM UHLS kicked the novelization up two or three levels, kicking its ass most assuredly. The dialogue, and the flow of this movie are about as good as they make them, let me tell you. I just did. This movie is the best translation of a movie I have ever seen. It is one of those rare movies that is better than the book. In fact, there are very few of those, very few. So few that this is the only one. Few. Few squared, twice. This is what a screenplay adaptation should be, all of the time.

THE VERDICT

This is hands down in my top ten. One of my favorite movies of all time, so good I usually pass out at the end scene from sensory overload. Also there is blood. If you don't like this movie, you are either old, stupid, or some sort of weird, hybrid robot that is both a combination of old and stupid, and also eats human flesh... and flies too, don't forget that. See it, great everything. Just see it, please. DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! Succumb to the pressure.
