As of 11/11/2006 this movie is ranked #90 on the imdb.com list of the top 250 films of all time.
Many people in Washington were outraged with this film upset at the amount of drinking and corruption it showed in the film. Contrarily many dictatorships throughout Europe banned the film fearing it showed that democracy works.
During the infamous filibuster scene, James Stewart made himself sound horse by drying out his throat with bicarbonate of soda.
Frank Capra had originally wanted to make a biography film about Chopin but Columbia Pictures said it would cost too much money and denied his request, Capra then shifted gears and made this film.
The director of this film, Frank Capra, is most remembered for It's A Wonderful Life which also stared Jimmy (James) Stewart. If you look closely you will see many of the actors from It's A Wonderful Life featured in this movie.
The final cut of the film has a much shorter ending, originally scenes of Mr. Smith going back to his home state and getting a parade were featured. After a poor test response the scenes were cut, however some of this footage survives in the theatrical trailer for the film.
