TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• The plot of this movie comes from a combination of three different operas, La Boheme, La Traviata, and Orpheus In The Underworld.
• The only original song written for this movie was the song, Come What May, however the song was originally written for Baz Luhrmann's previous film Romeo + Juliet, but it never made it into the film. But since it was not written specifically for this movie, it still was banned from getting nominated for Best Original Song according to their rules. It did however get a nomination for best song at the Golden Globes.
• The necklace that Nicole Kidman wears in this movie is made of real diamonds and platinum and at an estimated value of $1 million dollars, it is the most expensive piece of jewelry ever designed for a film.
• The premiere for this movie was held in the small Australian town of Taree, where Luhrmann grew up. The theater held 250 people and tickets were sold at the local drug store.
• Baz Luhrmann also considered Rene Zellwegger and Courtney Love for the role of Satine. Although he eventually went with Nicole Kidman, it did help Luhrmann to convince Courtney Love to licensee the song Smells Like Teen Spirit for use in the movie. Something that she does not normally allow.
• Filming had to stop for 2 weeks when during rehearsals for a dance number Nicole Kidman fell and hurt her knee and broke 2 ribs. When filming did resume she was still in a wheelchair, so many of the shots were she is seen from the shoulders up were shot while she was sitting in the chair.
• The small stature of John Leguizamo in this movie is achieved in several ways. In some scenes he is walking in his knees in special knee braces and green socks so that the back of his legs could be removed digitally in post-production. In other scenes a stand-in who is actually the correct height is used. While in other scenes he simply crouches down and the camera is positioned in a way where the legs can't be seen.
• The scenes that show the city of Paris was nearly all special effects, and in fact the sweeping scenes hold the record for the two longest special effects shots in film.
