Albert Brooks was able to get permission to rework the classic
song "Mrs. Robinson" by asking co-star Debbie Reynolds to ask her daughter
Carrie Fisher to call in a favor owed to her from her ex-husband, Paul
Simon. She asked to allow use of the song as a thank you for her not asking
for any alimony after they divorced in 1984, and Simon agreed.

Before deciding on Debbie Reynolds for the part of Beatrice
he had asked Nancy Reagan, who used to be an actress long before she was
the First Lady. She had to decline the role as she was caring for her husband
who suffering a losing battle with Alzheimer's. He then turned to Doris
Day, as he was looking for an old leading lady to come out of retirement
to play the part, however she turned the part down. He then turned to long
time friend Carrie Fisher and asked her if her mother Debbie Reyonlds would
be interested in the part, and as a result, she got the part.
