TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• This movie is based on the twenty volume book series written by Patrick O'Brien. Most of the material comes from the two books Master And Commander and The Far Side Of The World, hence the titles, however some characters and scenes are stolen from some of the other books in the series as well.
• There was already an existing replica of the famous SS. Surprise called the SS. Rose which 20th Century Fox was able to purchase for 1.5 million. This ship doubles for the SS. Surprise in the film except where models are used for far away shots. After filming was completed 20th Century sold the ship to the San Diego Maritime Museum for an undisclosed amount with a stipulating agreement that they would have to loan the ship back to the company if any sequels were made.
• In the original story the enemy was not French it was American, however the producers wanted that point changed, so the timeline of the story was moved back seven years at a time when England was at war with Napoleon ruled France, and the French became the enemy.
• This is the first film to ever shoot on location at the Galapagos Islands. While most of the shots of the group actually walking on the island were shot elsewhere, the shots of the island from the boat were the real deal.
• Peter Weir shot film in advance of an actually typhoon, and cut the footage into the film in post production.
