MARIE ANTOINETTE
THE BACK OF THE BOX
WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
Academy Award winner Sofia
Coppola (2003, Best Writing, Lost In Translation) directs an electrifying
yet intimate re-telling of the turbulent life of history's favorite villainess,
Marie Antoinette. Kirsten Dunst portrays the ill-fated child princess who
married France's young and indifferent King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman).
Feeling isolated in a royal court rife with scandal and intrigue, Marie

by Antonia Fraser.

Writer/director Sofia Coppola said that she started working
on this film years ago and got stuck in the middle of it and began writing
another story on the side to help her frustration. That story ended up
becoming Lost In Translation and after the film's success she dove
back into the script and was able to complete it.
-
There are numerous historical errors in this movie that caused
some groups in France to boycott the movie. However director/writer Sofia
Coppola said this movie was meant to be an artistic take on her life and
not a biographical film.

The production was allowed special permission to film in
Palace of Versailles. They were even allowed to film in The Hall Of Mirrors
which was closed for restoration at the time of filming.
-
During a scene where Marie Antoinette is getting ready, a
pair of blue converse tennis shoes can clearly be seen. Sofia Coppola has
said that the shoes are intentionally in the frame in order to make the
character seem more identifiable as a typical teenager.
