This film is based on a short story of the same name written
by Rudyard Kipling. The story first appeared in 1888 in the book The
Phantom Rickshaw And Other Tales. Kipling appears as a character in
this film, played by Christopher Plummer.

John Huston had been trying to make this story into a film
for about twenty years before the film was actually made. Originally the
idea was pitched in the 1950's with hopes of casting Clark Gable and Humphrey
Bogart.

Both Sean Connery and Michael Caine had to sue Allied Artists
as they objected to the amount they were paid out from their profit sharing.
They eventually settled and they received $250,000 a piece.
