Andy Kaufman and Jim Carrey share the same birthday, January
17th.
-
When casting the part of Andy Kaufman it came down to two
finalists, Jim Carrey and Edward Norton. Director Milos Forman said he
could not decide who would do better so he left it up to Universal to make
the decision who went with Jim Carrey since his movies constantly made
more than Norton's at the box office.
-
While Lorne Michaels plays himself in this movie as the producer
of Saturday Night Live, the fact of the matter is that in 1982 Lorne
Michaels was not the executive producer. Lorne left the show from 1980-1985,
the actual producer was Dick Ebersol.
-
This film was named after the song of the same name by R.E.M.
who made a tribute song to the late Andy Kaufman on their album Automatic
For The People. R.E.M. wrote another Kaufman song for the soundtrack
of this film as well called The Great Beyond.
-
The entire cast of Taxi was brought in to shoot scenes
with Jim Carrey, the only people who did not appear were Danny DeVito who
was cast in a different role in the film and Tony Danza who refused to
appear as he and Andy Kaufman did not get a long in real life.
-
Throughout the several month shoot actor Jim Carrey demanded
that everyone on and off set refer to him and treat him as if he was Andy
Kaufman in an effort to keep him in character.
-
Before being cast as Andy Kaufman, Jim Carrey purchased Kaufman's
actual bongos at an auction as he was a big fan of Kaufman. As a result
the bongos seen in the movie are Kaufman's real bongos.
