    Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) are two Americans in Tokyo. Bob is a movie star in town to shoot a whisky commercial, while Charlotte is a young woman tagging along with her workaholic photographer husband (Giovanni Ribisi). Unable to sleep Bob and Charlotte cross paths one night in the luxury hotel bar. This chance meeting soon becomes a surprising friendship. Charlotte and Bob venture through Tokyo, having often hilarious encounters with its citizens, and ultimately discover a new belief in life's possibilities.
    Shot entirely on location in Japan, Sofia Coppola's Lost In Translation is a valentine to the nature of close friendships and to the city of Tokyo. Ms. Coppola's film, from her original screenplay, contemplates the unexpected connections we make that might not last - yet stay with us forever.

TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• This film was was shot in just 27 days on a budget of only 4 million dollars. Instead of story boarding Coppola went out in advance and took photos of where and what she wanted to film and then recreated them when they showed up for shooting.
• Sofia Coppola stated that she wrote the lead role in this movie for Bill Murray, and that if he had turned the role down it would never have been made. Murray not only took the role, but now counts it as his favorite movie that he has ever made.
• Charlotte's Japanese friend Charlie is not a professional actor, he is actual a long time friend and of Sofia Coppola, as well as her tour guide whenever she goes to Tokyo. As of 2009 it is his sole film credit.
• Coppola based much of the movie on her own experiences, basing the character of Charlotte on herself. While Giovanni Ribisi's character is loosely based on her husband Spike Jonze. Their are also rumors that Anna Faris' character is based on Cameron Diaz, who Spike Jonze worked with on Being John Malkovich.
• At the end of the film Bob whispers something to Charlotte that is inaudible, and for years what was actually said remained a mystery. However in 2006 a television show called The Culture Show used special sound enhancing equipment and determined that Bob said, "I love you. Don't forget to always tell the truth." This has never been confirmed by the actors or Sofia Coppola.
