It was originally reported that this film was forced to be
edited down from an "R" rating to a "PG-13" one by the studio in order
to help boost ticket sales. However Bruce Willis has said in interviews
that the original intent when they started production was to make a PG-13
film despite all of the past Die Hard films being rated "R". Furthering
this mystery is the subsequent release of an Unrated version of the film
on DVD.
-
This film went through numerous name changes. Very early
in preproduction this film was titled Die Hard: Tears Of The Sun,
however Willis wanted to use this name for another one of his films, so
he convinced Fox to let him use the Tears Of The Sun title on the
condition he would agree to do a 4th Die Hard when the script was
finished. Later on the name was changed to Die Hard 4: Die Hardest,
Die
Hard: Reset, Die Hard 4.0 (this name was actually used for the
European release of the film) before finally ending up as Live Free
Or Die Hard.

Larry Rippenkroeger, Bruce Willis' stunt double for this
film, was injured when he fell more than 25 feet on to concrete breaking
his wrists and several bones in his face. Willis paid out of his own pocket
to put Rippenkroeger's parents up in a hotel room and made frequent personal
visits to check on his recovery.
-
Originally the story for this movie was supposed to revolve
around McClane's son becoming an internet criminal, and John being forced
to catch and deliver his son to the FBI. However that idea was scrapped
and the "bad guy" was replaced with the Thomas Gabriel character, and McClane's
daughter was the put in place of the son.
-
Kevin Smith, a die hard Die Hard fan was able to get
a role in this movie much to his chagrin.
