TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED
FRIENDS
-
This film was based on the story The Little Sea-Maid,
by Hans Christian Andersen , it was previously considered for adaptation
in the late 1930's as a part of Silly Symphonies but replaced by
The
Ugly Duckling. Before it was replaced though there were several watercolor
drawings made by Kay Nielsen which were brought out of the Disney vault
and were used as inspiration for this film. As a result Nielsen received
a "visual development" credit.
-
This was the last Disney movie that used had drawn and painted
cells, however it was also the first use of the CAPS (Computer Animation
Production System) used during the scene when Ariel is running down the
stairs of the castle. All Disney movies since then have used only the CAPS
system.
-
Unlike most Disney films a live actress was brought in to
act out the parts of Ariel to give animators a reference to draw from.
The actress was played by Sherri Stone, and some of the animators were
so upset by bringing her on board they actually quit the project.
-
There were so many details in this movie that the two-minute
storm sequence alone took more than a year to animate.
-
In the crowd scene when King Triton enters the arena if you
look closely you can see Micky, Donald, and Goofy animated as mermen in
the crowd of people. The same likeness would later be seen in the Little
Mermaid levels of the game Kingdom Hearts years later.
-
During the the wedding scene, the priest's knee can be seen
moving underneath his tunic, however this was commonly mistaken as an erection.
There was such an uproar (including a law suit brought against Disney)
that whatever was moving under the tunic can no longer be seen in newer
versions of the film.
-
On the original cover of this film drawn into the castle's
pillars is a penis, which was subsequently removed from future editions
of the film.
-
This marked the first Disney film to win an Academy Award
since Bedknobs And Broomsticks.
-
The directors of the film insisted that all of the millions
of bubbles seen in the film be hand drawn, as a result much of the bubble
animation had to be farmed out to China. This was during the uprising at
Tienamin Square, the uprising actually nearly caused delay in the film's
release.
