DESCRIPTION:
From Academy Award winning
director Clint Eastwood comes the untold story of the Japanese soldiers
who defended their homeland against invading American forces during World
War II. With little defense other than sheer will and the volcanic rock
of Iwo Jima itself, the unprecedented tactic of General Tadamchi Kuribayashi
(Ken Watanabe, The Last Samurai) and his men transform what was
predicted to be a swift defeat into nearly 40 days of heroic and resourceful
combat. Their sacrifices, struggles, courage and compassion live on in
this taut, gripping film Rolling Stone calls "unique and unforgettable."

-
This movie is based on the book Picture Letters From Commander
In Chief by Tadamichi Kuribayashi, the author is portrayed by Ken Wantanbe
in the movie. In the credits it states that this movie is based on that
book, and yet for some reason managed to get nominated in the Best Original
Screenplay category at the Oscars.
-
This movie was filmed back to back with Flags Of Our Fathers.
Neither film was allowed to film on the island of Iwo Jima itself as Japan
considers the island to be a sacred place because of all the Japanese who
died there. They were given one day to shoot the island's scenery only,
no actors were allowed to be filmed. As a result the movies were shot mostly
in Barstow and Bakersfield, California.

The actor who plays the role of Saigo, is also a member of
a popular Japanese boy band called Arashi.
