    Academy Award winners George Clooney and Renee Zellweger team up in this fun-filled comedy set against the beginnings of pro football. Dodge Connelly (Clooney), captain of a struggling squad of barroom brawlers, has only one hope to save his team: recruit college superstar Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski, The Office). But when a feisty reporter (Zellwegger) starts snooping around, she turns the two teammates into instant rivals and kicks off a wild competition filled with hilarious screwball antics! • This script was originally written in 1993 and purchased by Steven Soderberg and he tried to get Universal to make the movie, however it was never green-lit and the script hung around for several years before Soderberg gave the script to Clooney. Clooney loved the story, but thought the script needed work. So he re-wrote the entire script himself leaving only two of the original scenes unchanged. When it was decided to make the film he submitted his name to the WGA to receive credit as a writer in the film, however he was denied credit. Clooney was so outraged by this that he withdrew his active status in the Guild and removed his voting status, leaving him with a title of "Financial Core Memeber".
• Several of the characters in this movie are based very loosely on real historical figures. Carter Rutherford is based on real-life footballer Red Grange. His agent C.C. Frazier, is based on Grange's agent C.C. Pyle. Finally Dodge Connelly is based on 1920's football legend Johnny "Blood" McNally.
