This film is based on the Korean film Siworae written by Eun-Jeong Kim and Ji-na Yeo made in 2000.
John Cusack was originally asked to play the role of Alex Wyler, it was only after he turned the role down that the role was offered to Keanu Reaves.
Before finally deciding on The Lake House as a title, several other titles were considered, including The Sea and Il, Mare. Il, Mare was not only the name of the restaurant in the film, but it was also the name of the house in the original film Siworae.
