Director
Robert Hamer's fiendishly funny Kind Hearts And Coronets stands
as one of Ealing Studio's greatest triumphs, and one fo the most wickedly
black comedies ever made. Dennis Price is sublime as an embittered young
commoner determined to avenge his mother's unjust disinheritance by ascending
to her family's dukedom. Unfortunatley eight relatives - all played by
the incomparable Alec Guiness - must be eliminated before he can do so.

THE
GEEK BOX TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS
Alec Guinness liked the script for
this film so much he asked to play all eight members of the D'Ascoynes
family, the studio only want him to play four, but agreed when Guinness
made it clear it was eight or none.
The head of Ealing studios Michael
Balcon was furious at the sexual nature of Joan Greenwood that he nearly
threatened to edit the movie himself. After the film was released and was
a huge success, Blacon later recalled that this was his favorite movie
that was ever released under the Ealing studios name.
An extra ten seconds had to be tacked
onto the film for a US release in order to meet the US Production Code
of the time which stated that crime could not be shown to pay on screen.
Although the original ending was ambiguous it was required to be clear
that the scheme was not successful in order to gain distribution rights.
The extra ten seconds of the film was recently discovered and displayed
at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York.
Alec Guinness sat for a portrait seen
in the film which shows him as another ancestor of the D'Ascoynes family,
depending on who you ask this would actually make 9 characters that the
actor played in the film.
