-
This movie is based off the comic book and characters created
by Stan Lee, Don Heck, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby. Stan Lee said he originally
based the character of Tony Stark on real life rich man Howard Hughes.
-
Captain America's shield can be seen on Tony Stark's work
bench very briefly when Pepper Potts comes in and interrupts his work.
This is a tie-in along with the appearance of Samuel L. Jackson at the
end of the film as Nick Fury to the ultimate goal of creating an Avengers
movie.
-
Several attempts at making an Iron Man movie have
been made in recent years. In 1999 Quentin Tarantino was rumored to be
writing and directing an Iron Man movie however it fell through.
In 2004 Joss Whedon was in negotiations to to direct the movie, but again
the project fell through. Finally Nick Cassavetes was set to direct this
movie, but at the last minute Jon Favreau who was going to direct the Captain
America movie asked and was given the helm. Several actors were also
set to play Tony Stark as well, at various times Nicolas Cage and Tom Cruise
and shown a lot of interest in playing the role, Cruise had even offered
to produce the film, but again, the project fell through.
-
In the original comics Tony Stark became Iron Man through
events that happened in the Vietnam War, director Jon Favreau did not want
this movie to be a period piece and so instead opted to update the origin
story and have it revolve around the war in Afghanistan.
-
Jon Favreau asked Rachel McAdams to play the role of Pepper
Potts however she turned the offer down. Gwyneth Paltrow agreed to take
the role, however in interviews she indicated she only agreed to do so
because filming took place just 20 minutes away from her house which made
it extremely convenient.
-
By the time filming began only the story was completed, most
of the dialogue as a result was improvised on set. Robert Downey Jr. especially
enjoyed this and requested multiple takes just so that he could see how
a different line might work. Director Jon Favreau also enjoyed this problem
and commented that the process gave the film a more fluid and natural feel.
-
In the original comics Jarvis was Tony Stark's butler, however
this idea was scrapped because they didn't want people pointing out the
similarities to Bruce Wayne and Alfred Pennyworth. Instead he was modified
into a computer system called JARVIS (which stands for Just A Rather Very
Intelligent System) and was voiced by Paul Bettany. Bettany said he recorded
all of his lines in less than two hours and did the voice-over work as
a favor to Jon Favreau who he became friends with on the set of Wimbeldon.
