• This film is based on the book of the same name by Jon Krakauer.
• Sean Penn had been wanting to make this film for many years, when he first set out to do the project he wanted the role of Chris to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and the role of Ron to be played by Marlon Brando.
• Emile Hirsch lost 40 pounds for his role in this film and did all of his own stunts.
• The man who gave Chris the boots in the beginning of the film is Jim Gallien, this is the same man who gave the actual Chris his boots before his Alaskan journey.
• G Baby, The Kid and The Janitor are all extras in this film. They appear as students in the graduation scene, if you know what they look like and watch the movie frame by frame, you can see them.
