• As of 11/10/2006 this movie is ranked #16 on the imdb.com list of the top 250 films of all time.
• While Steven Spielberg wanted Harrison Ford to play Indiana Jones, George Lucas vetoed him because Ford had been in Lucas' previous films American Graffiti and the Star Wars series. So the part went to Tom Selleck, but he had to back out of the role due to scheduling conflicts with Magnum P.I.
• Spielberg also wanted Danny DeVito to play the role of Sallah, but also had to turn down the role due to his commitments to the TV series Taxi. As a result the role went to John Rhys-Davies.
• This idea of this film was dreamed up while Steven Spielberg was on a vacation with George Lucas. Lucas was waiting to find out if Star Wars was going to be a success or not, and once he got word that it was successful he started throwing around ideas with Spielberg. Lucas told Spielberg that he secretly always had wanted to direct a James Bond film. Spielberg and him talked up a general outline of the character of Indiana Jones and then Lucas began working on a formal script with Lawrence Kasdan as soon as his trip was over.
• Even though George Lucas came up with the story and Lawrence Kasdan wrote the script, the story credit is shared with Philip Kaufman. It is said this is because Lucas was discussing an adventure story with him in the 70's and he suggested the idea of the Ark of the Covenant.
• This film features the film debut of actor Alfred Molina who plays the role of Satipo.
• Spielberg and Lucas were turned down by every major studio they shopped this film at, Paramount agreed to back the film after some major convincing. The film was intended to be a low budget action film, but the cost of filming ended up tripling what it was allotted coming in at 22 million dollars, despite shooting finishing ahead of schedule. The film ended up becoming the highest grossing film of 1981.
• There were many creative sound effects used in this film that earned it a special achievement Oscar. The sound of the boulder rolling was achieved by rolling a Honda Civic down a hill and capturing the sound. Like wise the sounds of punches for the film were achieved by recording the sound of a baseball bat hitting a pile of leather jackets.
• Indiana Jones really did get his name from a dog as revealed in Indian Jones And The Last Crusade. According to George Lucas his dog had the name first, and he parodied the dog's name after Steve McQueen's character in Nevada Smith.
• After the script was completed it was realized that the Nazi's in the film made no mention of the hatred for Jews, as a result the line: "This Jewish ritual makes me uncomfortable" was added.
• Much of the opening sequence of this film was inspired by an Uncle Scrooge comic titled: The Seven Cities Of Cibola.
• Spielberg claimed that this film originally received an R rating from the MPAA due to showing a man's head exploding. Spielberg did some editing and super-imposed fire in front of the effect lessening what you could see and they agreed to lower the rating to PG as there was no PG-13 rating at the time. They had the same problem with later Indiana Jones films and it was due to Spielberg's and Lucas' lobbying that the PG-13 rating was introduced.
