George Lucas has maintained since the 1980's that there was
originally supposed to be a total of five Indiana Jones movies,
as a result there has been massive speculation and rumors over the years
that another movie was in the works, but had all proved to be false. In
2002 Frank Darabont wrote a script that Steven Spielberg loved, however
George Lucas rejected the script for unknown reasons. Harrison Ford finally
put out an ultimatum that if they did not make this movie by 2008 then
he felt he would be too old to take on the role, from that point on things
kicked into high gear and the film was eventually made and released in
2008.
-
Sean Connery was asked to reprise his role as Henry Jones
Sr. in this film, however Connery refused saying that if there was any
film that would make him consider coming out of retirement, it would have
been this one, but still declined because he was just enjoying retirement
too much.
-
There was so much anticipation for this film that Spielberg
and Lucas were worried about details of the movie getting out before it's
release. As a result the script was kept closely guarded, the sets were
closed, and all actors had to sign an agreement promising not to reveal
what happened in the movie. In addition the film was delivered to theaters
with a combination lock on them so they could not be opened. A special
courier was then sent out with the combination to each of the theaters
with the combination on them so that early screenings were not possible.
-
Harrison Ford insisted on doing most of his own stunts as
he had done on the previous Indy movies despite being over the age
of 60 at the time of shooting. To prepare for the hits his body would be
taking, it is reported he worked out everyday with a personal trainer and
used a high-protein diet to quickly bulk himself up.
-
In the thrown room etched into one of the tiles is C-3PO
and R2-D2, legend has it that these characters can be seen hidden somewhere
throughout all of the Indy movies.
-
Originally Nazi's were supposed to be the villains in this
movie, however this was changed at the request of Steven Spielberg as he
felt that he could not resume making the cartoon version of the Nazi's
seen in the previous films, claiming that his experiences on Schindler's
List changed the way he viewed them. George Lucas backed the decision,
stating that you couldn't make a film taking place in the 1950's without
referencing the Cold War.
