This movie is based on the book of the same name by Richard
Matheson.
-
Richard Matheson, the author of the book on which this film
is based, initially helped adapt his story to the big screen in the 1964
Vincent Price film The Last Man Standing. This story was then adapted
again into film in 1971 as the Charlton Heston movie The Omega Man.
In the 90's Ridley Scott was set to adapt the film yet again with Arnold
Schwarzenegger in the lead but the project fell through due to massive
budget problems. Finally in 2002 Will Smith reunited with Michael Bay in
attempt to film the movie which ended up being scrapped in favor of Bad
Boys II. Will Smith kept championing the movie and repeatedly asked
Guillermo Del Toro to direct the project, but he had to turn down the opportunity
as he was already committed to shooting Hell Boy II: The Golden Army.

This movie's budget was extremely large. For a single 6 night
stretch of shooting on the Brooklyn Bridge it cost Warner Brothers more
than 5 million dollars. This amount paid to close the bridge, hire 1000
extras, 250 crew members, and and 160 actual National Guard members wearing
full combat gear. The producers also had to gain permission from 14 different
government agencies to approve the closing of the bridge itself. Throughout
shooting several other streets were closed down for several evenings and
weekends, as well as massive areas of Central Park being cordoned off from
the public. During the holidays the cities decorations had to be constantly
taken down and put back up around shooting schedules, while the special
effects explosions wreaked havoc on local businesses. Will Smith issued
a public apology to the residents of New York when the movie premiered
in the Big Apple in 2007.
